5 New Series And Movies OTT Releases This Weekend

The IPL season 2022 is gaining traction. Big films are being released in theatres, and life is returning to normal. Mega movies like KGF 2 (Kannada) and Beast (Tamil) are coming out next week. OTT platforms, on the other hand, continue to exist in the scheme of things.

Dasvi is a straight-to-streamer release this week. The Tamil film Taanakkaran is another direct-on-OTT release this week.

We also have Naradan, a much-anticipated Malayalam socio-political thriller. It stars Tovino Thomas, who is one of Malayalam’s rising talents; you can see some of his recent work here.

We are not adding the Tamil film Etharkkum Thunindhavan and the Telugu film Stand Up Rahul to our weekly list due to the normal number restriction.

We do, however, have room for the popular web series Abhay and Gullak, both of which will premiere their third seasons this week.

Director: Aashiq Abu

Cast: Tovino Thomas, Anna Ben, Sharafudheen, Indrans, Renji Panicker, Vijayaraghavan

Language: Malayalam

Platform: Amazon Prime Video

Release date: April 8, 2022.

Television journalism has evolved into a modern-day plague. TV news has become a ludicrous tamasha due to the frenzied battle for the all-important TRP numbers. It also contains very little actual journalism. Naradan is a biting indictment of the rot that has infected at least a portion of the visual arts. The film delves into the realm of television journalism without being preachy. In some ways, the film emphasises that harsh and theatrical news anchors are a product of the system. It’s what drives news anchors and journalists to seek out issues and, if none exist, to create them in questionable and unethical ways.

The movie reveals what goes on behind the scenes of the media’s never-ending quest for exclusives. The film’s depiction of newsrooms and studios has been acclaimed for its realism. The film’s courtroom drama raises important considerations about what constitutes public interest journalism.

Dasvi Netflix India

Director: Tushar Jalota

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam Dhar, Nimrat Kaur

Language: Hindi

Platform: Netflix

Release date: April 7, 2022.

Abhishek Bachchan and Yami Gautam Dhar, the leads in Dasvi, are too enamoured with OTT platforms. So it appears. Ludo, The Big Bull, and Bob Biswas, the Bachchan junior’s previous three films, all opted for a direct release on streamers. A Thursday, Bhoot Police, and Ginny Weds Sunny, Yami Gautam Dhar’s last three films, were all streamed directly on OTT platforms. Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films are producing Dasvi. Mimi, their previous collaboration, was also released on Netflix.

So you’d expect such a pairing to succeed in Dasvi, which is also available on Netflix. This political comedy examines how politicians, despite their lack of education, continue to manipulate the country’s educational system. The plot revolves around an uneducated politician who sets out to clear his dasvi (class 10) while his wife is forced to become a politician during his absence.

Director: Vikram Prabhu, Anjali Nair, Lal, M S Bhaskar

Cast: Tamizh

Language: Tamil

Platform: Disney+ Hotstar

Release date: April 8, 2022.

Vikram Prabhu, the grandson of famed Tamil actor Sivaji Ganesan and the son of Prabhu, is looking for a breakthrough film. Vikram Prabhu’s recent movies have failed to make an impression after his initial successes. His selection of stories and directors has been a little disappointing. He intends to change his fortunes with Taanakkaran, which means police constables in Tamil.

Rather than waiting for a theatrical release during the pandemic, the film has chosen to stream straight on the streaming service. The film has already received positive word-of-mouth for being a hard-hitting and sensitive account of what happens at police training institutes, particularly those that train lower-level cops. The film depicts the hardships that young police recruits encounter. Vikram Prabhu had previously worn khaki in films such as Sigaram Thodu and Thuppaakki Munai. Tamizh, who is making his directorial debut, also starred as a corrupt officer in Suriya’s Jai Bhim.

Director: Ken Ghosh

Cast: Kunal Khemu, Palak Singh, Pratyaksh Panwar, Asha Negi

Language: Hindi

Platform: Zee5

Release date: April 8, 2022.

This Ken Ghosh-directed film has been a big hit, and it is now in its third season. The crime drama is based on true events and follows Abhay Pratap Singh, a brilliant investigating officer with a criminal mind who will go to any length to solve a case. As is customary in crime dramas, the investigating officer has his issues to deal with.

The show follows the titular cop as he investigates gruesome and brutal murders in the badlands of Uttar Pradesh. The first two seasons of the sitcom depicted Abhay’s transformation into a tough, no-nonsense cop. In the third, he finds himself at a fork in the road between his existence and the mission at hand, which is to combat a new threat that involves a dangerous cult leader.

Gullak Season 3 SonyLIV

Director: Shreyansh Pandey

Cast: Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Harsh Mayar

Language: Hindi

Platform: SonyLIV

Release date: April 7, 2022.

The experiences of middle-class families, which were beautifully depicted in Doordarshan broadcasts in the past, have a peculiar attraction. Following that, the television series devolved into a quagmire of monumentally meaningless dramas. The charming slice-of-life experience had vanished.

Gullak, on the other hand, had a strong and sensitive middle-class atmosphere when it initially began streaming on SonyLiv over three years ago. It tells the story of the Mishra family, a normal middle-class family in a sleepy North Indian village. It’s a typical household with typical problems. Its problems aren’t really serious. Unexpected visitors, nosy neighbours, and office politics are just a few examples. It’s because of this that it’s so relatable and engaging. Season 3 continues in the same vein. And that’s comforting.
