Season 2 of Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s fantasy novel series, Shadow and Bone, is currently in production. But that’s all we know about the show’s second season, and it might be a while before we see it on TV or our phones again.
Will it, or will it not? According to the newest speculations, Shadow and Bone season 2 will begin production soon, but you’ll have to keep reading to learn more. The series is also up for a People’s Choice award in the category of “sci-fi/fantasy show of 2021,” and we’ll learn out if it wins on December 8 during the presentation.
Meanwhile, what do we know about Season 2 of Shadow and Bone?
We’ll go through everything we know about the show’s second season, including potential storey points, returning cast members, when we think it’ll return, and more, in the sections below. From here on out, beware of Shadow and Bone season 1 spoiler, as well as possible future plot information based on what we know about the novels. You should back up now if you don’t want to know anything.
Shadow and bone season 2 release date Netflix 2023?
Season 2 has yet to be given an official release date.
Shadow and Bone will return for a second season, as it was confirmed at Netflix Geeked Week in June. Aside from that, there are no further details on when it will return to our screens.
Showrunner Eric Heisserer disclosed in a thread on his personal Twitter account that he had already written a large portion (if not all) of the scripts for the upcoming instalment. And he appears to have finished season 2 in April 2021, just before Netflix took up a second season.
Given an Instagram post by Bardugo, this appears to be more likely. The author informed her followers that she will be taking a social media hiatus for the next few months to work on Shadow and Bone season 2 and other projects. Hopefully, much of the pre-production work will be completed by the end of the year, allowing principal photography to begin in earnest.
In addition, executive producer Shawn Levy told Collider that after Heisserer and Bardugo finished writing the scripts, the show would “go into production quickly.” However, there have been no big modifications since then.
Moviesr.net appears to have backed up Levy’s claims. Shadow and Bone season 2 was rumoured to start filming in November 2021, according to the publication’s sources. However, given that the shooting has not yet begun, this appears to be erroneous information.
According to other sources, principal photography will begin in January 2022, according to one from What’s on Netflix. An Active Productions List – a list of movies and TV shows scheduled to be made in Canada – clearly suggests that a portion of Shadow and Bone’s second season will be shot between January 10 and May 18. Filming is said to be taking place in Budapest once more.
Several members of the Shadow and Bone cast are also scheduled to participate at Roster Con in Paris on January 22 and 23. As a result, we could gain official confirmation of Season 2’s premiere date, as well as any fresh cast announcements, here.
In any case, season 2 should start filming soon. Shadow and Bone’s second season could arrive in late 2022 if it happens quickly. But don’t get your expectations up, because there will be lots of post-production work to do once filming is through. With that in mind, we anticipate the second season of Shadow and Bone to premiere in early 2023.
Shadow and Bone season 2 trailer is one available?
There isn’t, and there won’t be for a long time. We could see a teaser in late 2022 if major photography begins shortly. There won’t be any footage for any of us to see until then.
Shadow and Bone season 2 Which characters will be back?
Although there is no confirmation on this front, we believe that all of the main characters from Season 1 will return. This would include the following:
- Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa
- Kit Young as Jesper Fahey
- Danielle Gilligan as Nina Zenik
- Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar
- Zoe Wanamaker as Baghra
- Sujaya Dasgupta as Zoya Nazyalensky
- Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov
- Ben Barnes as General Kirigan/the Darkling
- Archie Renaux as Malyen “Mal” Oretsov
- Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker
Alina and Mal will almost certainly return as Shadow and Bone’s main characters, as will Kerrigan, who survived the attack in the Shadow Fold in the first season’s finale.
Season 2 should include Kaz, Jesper, and Inej as well. The Dregs’ plot (more on this below) will line up with Nina and Matthias’ in the same way as it did in the Six of Crows duology, so we should see the former group team up with the latter. This was hinted at in the penultimate episode of season 1, so anticipate them to team up like they do in the books.
In terms of which characters from Bardugo’s book series might make the transition to the live-action TV series, Heisserer has confirmed that season 2 will feature “one hundred per cent more Wylan.” Wylan Van Eck joins the Dregs as a demolition expert for a job within Fjerdan’s military stronghold, the Ice Court, in the novels. However, we don’t know if season 2 will continue with the same plot.
Nikolai Lantsov is another character who could debut in season 2. In the books, Nikolai takes the alias Sturnhound and leads a pirate armada to aid the kingdom of Ravka’s war effort. Nikolai becomes a crucial ally of Alina and Mal, therefore his appearance in Netflix’s adaptation will be crucial if the TV show’s storyline in season 2 is primarily based on Siege and Storm.
During an interview with Inverse, Heisserer hinted at Nikolai’s probable involvement in season 2, thus he may be a new cast member when the following entry’s casting announcements are made.

Shadow and Bone season 2 plot what is it going to be?
Season 2 may continue the Siege and Storm and Six of Crow’s tales. Season 2 should continue their trip to other regions to keep Alina out of Kerrigan’s reach, with Alina and Mal heading their separate ways to the Dregs following the season 1 end.
Kerrigan has tapped into his Darkling powers and created new Fold creatures known as Nichevo’ya, as shown in the final episode of Season 1. These monsters, unlike the Volcra who live in the Fold, can travel in broad daylight and will be tough for Alina and Mal to defeat.
In a similar spirit to how season 1 incorporated the Dregs into Alina’s journey, Ben Barnes, who plays Kirigan/the Darkling in Netflix’s TV drama, has expressed interest in seeing season 2 “drift off” from the storey in the books (via Collider).
It’s unknown whether Heisserer and the show’s other producers would do so, but if they do, it’ll be a unique take on the source material. It would provide new content for existing fans, similar to what season 1 did, but we’ll have to wait and see if the show’s creative staff continues this path.
Meanwhile, the Dregs are expected to join forces with Nina to liberate Matthias, with the two of them – as well as Wylan – playing a major role in Kaz’s plan to rescue Bo Yul-Bayur, an inventor of a narcotic that Grisha finds addicting, from Fjerda’s Ice Court. The Ice Court’s ‘impossible heist’ viewpoint was already used in Shadow and Bone season 1 for the Dregs’ initial attempt to try and capture Alina, thus Bo’s rescue could be changed for the TV series.
Zoya’s storyline could be borrowed from another Grishaverse duology, King of Scars. Zoya’s character is given a more significant position in Bardugo’s second duology, and elements of the tale from these books may be included in the TV programme, according to Bardugo’s teaser in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
In the season 1 conclusion, Zoya was seen searching for her family in Novokribrisk, the city that Kirigan destroys with the Fold. If she discovers that they’ve died, Zoya could rejoin the Dregs, as she did in the Six of Crows’ Crooked Kingdom novel, or she could incorporate portions of her tale from the King of Scars novel.
Season 2 will have a certain number of episodes, which we already know. Shadow and Bone will return for another eight-episode season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
However, it’s unclear if this will just focus on Alina and Mal’s voyage, or if the Dregs and Zoya will also play a role (as we speculated above). When Netflix releases a synopsis or the actors and crew resume blogging about the program on social media, we’ll know. For the time being, we’re in the same boat as you

Shadow and Bone season 2 is it deserving of a second chance?
Hopefully yes, The Grishaverse, while not as popular as other prominent fantasy series like The Witcher, Harry Potter, or The Lord of the Rings, still has a substantial and devoted fan base. Its fan base is likely to have risen as well, as Netflix’s version has introduced the series to new viewers since its April release.
Netflix’s rendition of the Grishaverse can go in a variety of directions as well. Shadow and Bone, like the streamer’s developing Witcher-Verse, might lead to spin-offs that go deeper into the cosmos and employ Bardugo’s source material as a foundation. In and around season 2, Netflix can go in a variety of directions, whether it’s expanding on a pre-existing short tale or developing wholly new content.
If the show continues to be a hit, Netflix may decide to produce additional seasons and spin-offs. Shadow and Bone’s future may be bright if its second season pulls a significant audience again since the streaming giant has proved it will put faith in projects that yield large watching figures.
